SL Jones lived in Hinton, West Virginia. He worked as a carpenter for nearly 50 years for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. He taught himself to play the fiddle and banjo. After retiring in 1967, he started carving. He was known for his carved heads, which he carved initially with a chain saw and then used hand tools to finish. After a stroke late in life, SL had to give up carving and turned to painting. In his last years he did mostly drawings. Shields Landon Jones has been included in several exhibitions and is considered an extremely important American Folk Artist.
