Richard has spent most of his life in South Carolina, having moved there with his mother and six other siblings from Baltimore at the age of five. After a stint in the army and a stay in Charlotte, Richard is again a resident of the Palmetto State. Richard began to paint in 1976 and uses whatever paint he can find. He paints on found objects such as plywood, gourds, paper sacks, and even cast-off furniture. He is most known for his “Three Kings” paintings, but often chooses his subject matter from among the animal kingdom. Snakes, turtles, and tigers often take shape under Richard’s hand. He was part of the “Flying Free: Twentieth Century Self-Taught Art from the Collection of Ellin and Baron Gordon” which ran from May 18th to October 26th, 1997 at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg, Virginia.
