Jack Savitsky was born and lived his entire life in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania. He quit school in the sixth grade and started work in the mines. In 1959, Jack’s mine closed and his son suggested that he take up painting. By 1961, he was part of the group of artists being promoted by Sterling Strauser. As are so many of our nation’s coal miners, Jack was afflicted by black lung disease. As a result, he ceased to paint in oils in 1984, when his Doctor advised him that the fumes from the oil paint were making the disease worse. He continued to create using colored pencils, prismacolor, and markers on paper. He would draw on notebook paper, cereal boxes turned inside out, or any other surface that was readily available. His colorful drawings of life around the Pennsylvania Coal Region are prized among collectors. Biblical scenes such as Adam and Eve, The Serpent in the Garden, and The Lion and the Lamb are also favorites. His work has been featured in many exhibitions. Jack is considered to be one of the prominent American Folk Artists of the 20th Century.
